Explore the world of spoken word performance. Students discover its’ art and history before going on to learn the rules and elements of spoken word competitions (known as poetry slams). They write pieces expressing themselves in a contemporary style and host their very own slam competition. Who will walk away with the title of top spoken word artist of your class?

Key Inquiry Question: How can we use the methods of oral communication to find our voices?

Programme Objectives

By the end of the programme, students will:

  • describe the history of spoken word performance
  • identify issues of social justice
  • draft, polish and perform a piece of spoken word poetry
